My new Gadget the Eee PC

I read about this laptop a little while ago in a magazine it was designed for children in third world country’s to be a low cost, robust full featured PC for less than $250 US. Demand for this unit has been high and its easy to understand why the Asus Eee PC is a small light weight PC much more portable than a regular laptop it is around 7″ diagonally across and about an inch thick weighing less than a kilogram.

It came shipped with a Modified Linux OS installed but after reading about the potential of these PC’s i bought it with the intention of formatting it and instaling Windows XP.

The EEE PC has a Intel Celeron M 900 MHz CPU, 4 GB SSD (Solid-State Disk) this means no moving parts in fact other than a small cooling fan this PC has no moving parts, it comes with 512MB of ram that can be easily up graded to 1GB,

  • Integrated 10/100 Ethernet
  • Atheros 802.11b/g Wireless LAN
  • Full Keyboard with TouchPad
  • Built-in memory card reader
  • 3 USB Ports
  • A External VGA port to attach the PC to a second display device such as a projector or monitior
  • Built in Web cam
  • 7-inch LCD display (800 x 480 resolution
  • The battery is rated for around 2.5 hours usage but i have been pushing this to around 3.5 by turning down the brightness of the screen and the volume of the speakers.

the Eee PC with Windows XP suprised me to no end at how fast it ran booting from the push of the power button to the desktop in around 20 seconds (Faster than my dual core 3GHZ AMD desktop) after booting it continues to impress by  being very responsive. and running everything I throw at it.

While it is designed primarily for web and email access word processing etc with the default Linux OS which is a GUI tabbed based interface which even someone with little to no understanding of computers could quickly learn to use, I have squeezed a windows installation on to the device including MS Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher) i have been running Googles Sketchup6 (A powerfull 3d CAD program.

I connect my mobile phone via a usb cable for GPRS internet access anywhere i go and when at home can sit on the couch with it while connected to the net via WIFI.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who is new to computers or the seasoned veteran who wants a very portable pc (it fits in the glove box of my barina).
